Ryan NYP 'Spirit Of St Louis' Charles Lindbergh

Charles A. Lindbergh ordered an aircraft from Ryan Airlines (a small San Diego company). At the end of February 1927, Chief Engineer Donald A. Lindbergh was appointed Chief Engineer. Hall and W. Hawley Bowlus began work on a prototype. Two months later, the Ryan NYP (for "New York to Paris") was ready. Named 'Spirit of St Louis' in honor of the St Louis financiers who supported the project, it began a series of tests and flew to New York between May 10 and 12, setting a new transcontinental record. On the morning of May 20, 1927, C.A Lindbergh took off from New York, and after thirty three hours, thirty minutes, he landed at Le Bourget after a 5810 km crossing, at an average speed of 173 km/hour. The Ryan NYP was a direct derivative of the conventional N-2 postal aircraft and its engine was a nine cylinder 230 HP Wright Whirlwind radial nine-cylinder.
